The death has been announced in Keswick of Normandy veteran, Arthur Ibbotson, at the age of 99.
Conscripted at 18 years old, he was among thousands of troops to storm the beaches on June 6, 1944.
It was the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare as Allied forces landed on the coast of occupied France to drive out the Nazis.
A former member of the Grenadier Guards (2nd Battalion) who landed at Sword Beach, Arthur was aged just 21 when VE Day was announced on May 8, 1945.
Three years ago in an interview with The Reminder after the 75th VE Day celebrations were cancelled by Covid, he told of seeing action across Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, with the typical understatement of the men of his era.
Mr Ibbotson, originally from Pateley Bridge, near Harrogate, had lived in Keswick since getting a job in Cumberland in 1949.
His funeral is at St John’s Church, on Friday June 23, at noon.
