The new women’s and girls’ squad at Keswick Cricket Club are pictured before their opening encounter with Stainton Sapphires at Fitz Park on Tuesday. The team, captained by Ruth Barnes, won their inaugural match by 28 runs on a sun-blessed evening and in front of a good crowd of supporters.
The Keswick team (which has yet to come up with a collective title) is made up of Ruth Barnes, Ava DeVaal, Sophia Back, Eliza Karolyi-Horvath, Katy Pepper, Emma Powell, Anna Broadbent, Eva Lloyd, Kate Clark, Bev Marrs, Grace Roper, Sarah Brack and Annette Doyle.
An impression of what cricket for women and girls is all about was perhaps explained by the front cover of a notebook, a gift from her mother-in-law, Elizabeth, to Sarah Brack who, with Annette Doyle, is involved in co-ordinating team events at KCC.
“Cricket Girl,” The cover reads, “(noun) like a normal girl but . . . way cooler. See also: empowered, fierce.”
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Tuesday evening’s opening match, win or lose, fierce or not, and KCC’s next fixture is at Keswick, on Tuesday evening, June 27, against Cockermouth. There are also plans for a soft-ball festival at KCC in August featuring teams from across the county.
Thanks also to KCC junior coach John Bryson for his immense help in early practice sessions for the new KCC players. John and Neil Swainson (Stainton CC) also umpired Tuesday’s game.
