A resident of The Headlands has urged caravanners and those driving camper vans not to follow their satnavs as they head for campsites in the area.
Mary Mason has appealed for better signage to the sites after witnessing a daily procession of large and towed vehicles heading onto the estate and then having difficulty turning round on roads made narrow by parked cars on both sides.
“It’s an ongoing problem and I often go out to stop them and tell them not to follow their satnavs,” said Mrs Mason, a retired Boots worker. “If they go to the bottom of the hill they realise that they have taken a wrong turn and they cannot get round the sharp bend and start turning round.
“They can book on the sites at about 2pm and you can guarantee that at 1.30pm we will be saying: ‘Here they are’ again.
“I have seen cars getting scraped and caravans getting their bottoms taken off because the gradient of the hill is so steep and then you go onto the flat. You can hear the crunching as they try to turn.
“It’s quite a big problem. One day around Easter there were three caravans and cars all in a row coming along our road.
“I did see a lady once and she went down to the bottom and turned and took half the side of her car off and I don’t know whether she knew or not. She just drove off.”
Mrs Mason said that there was a “tiny” sign with a tent and caravan on it just past Booths along with signs directing traffic to parking and the rugby club.
“I don’t know what we can do about it. It does need extra signage but my message to caravanners and camper van drivers is: ‘Just don’t follow your satnav’.”
