A group of egg-throwing children whose disruptive behaviour caused anger and upset among residents living on Keswick’s ‘back streets’ have been dealt with by the police.
Cllr Jean Murray told a meeting of the town council that elderly people living in the area had had problems with a gang of young people running up and down Eskin Street throwing eggs at homes. She said there had also been problems on Wordsworth Street with eggs being thrown at the patio doors of properties.
“They were running down alleyways and jumping out of shop doorways,” said Cllr Murray. “They were 10 to 11-year-old children.”
PCSO Liam Forrester was present at the meeting and he said the police had been made aware of the issue and It’s Your Choice forms had been issued to the parents of the youngsters.
The form is like a warning letter sent to parents to inform them of their child’s behaviour. If a parent receives three It’s Your Choice letters this will become a referral to the Youth Offending Service.
Cllr Steve Harwood said there were still problems with vehicles travelling the wrong way down the one-way system in St John’s Street. He said that Cumberland Council appeared to be pushing the problem onto the police.
Mr Forrester said that although he had not witnessed incidences of vehicles flouting the law a post had been put on social media asking drivers to follow the one-way system. He urged people to take the registration number of vehicles going the wrong way down the street and report it to the police.
“A police officer can enforce a fine but I can’t,” he said. He was asked if the police could act on submitted photos and he said that he did not know, but would find out.
Council clerk Vivien Little said that she had met with Cumberland Council officers about the Keswick Transport Strategy and added that the situation on St John’s Street had been raised and was being looked at. “It is being taken seriously by Cumberland Council,” she said.
