A couple who have turned the Greyhound Inn at Bothel into a thriving community pub have been awarded West Cumbria CAMRA’s (Campaign for Real Ale) pub of the season accolade.
Landlords Rachel Scott and Andrew Wood were presented with the award on Saturday in recognition of their success in both promoting good quality beer from local Cumbrian breweries and also making the Greyhound a thriving community asset during the past nine months. They both left their jobs with the police to take over the pub in February.
Andrew had lived in the village for some time but both he and Rachel had no previous experience in running a pub .
But this did not stop them from making positive changes to the pub, talking to local breweries and bringing in their beers, brightening up the decor and liaising with locals.
Groups such as the gardening club and the village council have met at the pub and quiz and music nights have been organised.
However, the couple have now decided to return to their old jobs in the atomic energy police at Sellafield but not before they have found another couple, who live in the village, to take the pub over.
