A ‘postbox to heaven’ could be introduced in Keswick if it finds favour with town councillors.
A meeting of Keswick Town Council heard that a person had contacted the clerk offering to cover the costs of the box and maintenance.
Councillors learned that the postbox allows people who are bereaved to write messages to those they have lost and is available for the benefit of anyone who may need it.
The person who contacted the council said they had recently seen a post on the Workington Town Council website about a postbox that had been installed there.
“I think it’s a beautiful idea and would love something like this in Keswick,” said the letter to council clerk Vivien Little. “I think it would benefit a lot of local people, young and old.
“As someone who is recently bereaved I think this would be a great help to myself and many others.
“There would be no cost to the council as we would raise the funds for the postbox and maintain it ourselves.”
A report to councillors said that a postbox could be obtained for £164 and the parks manager had suggested it could be attached to the blank wall of the staff building in Hope Park. It adds that the council’s Responsible Finance Manager, Catherine Parker is happy for the money to come out of the council’s contingency budget.
“If councillors feel that it’s something that they wish to support, the letters can either be dealt with by the volunteers or the parks manager (other town councils that have them mulch the paper and mix with wild flower seeds), which could be worked out,” says the report, adding: “Councillors are asked if they want to support this scheme.”
