A couple who have achieved their goal of visiting every Wetherspoon pub in the country have ranked Keswick’s Chief Justice of the Common Pleas as being among the best in the country – for its carpet!
Alan and Agnes Forbes, aged 63 and 46, have placed the hostelry – a former police station and magistrates’ court – at number five in their list of favourite floor coverings after visiting all 900 of the chain’s venues over a period of eight years.
The couple, from Oxted in Surrey, said that the carpets are a ‘massive pull factor’ with each ‘Spoons’ having an individually designed pattern to complement the building, the area or the person the pub was named after.
Each bespoke carpet is hand-made on a traditional loom by Devon-based luxury carpet manufacturer Axminster Carpets and costs up to £30,000.
They found their number one carpet at Alan’s favourite, The Man in the Moon, Newport, Isle of Wight, and another favourite was The Caley Picture House in Edinburgh.
Andrew Hetherington, pub manager at The Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, said: “We are delighted that Alan and Agnes enjoyed their visit and congratulate them on their achievement of visiting every Wetherspoon pub.”
There is a whole website dedicated to cataloguing the many carpets with fans sending in pictures accompanied by ratings of the carpet, building, food and staff.
Alan and Agnes said that some of the most beautiful branches they have been to were once old churches, bath houses and former cinemas.
The duo always have a cup of £1.20 refill coffee at whatever pub they visit and the most branches they visited in one day was eight.
