Two hundred and fifty trees are to be planted in Keswick’s Fitz Park in a green initiative by environmental campaigners in the town.
The native trees will be located near the BMX track following a suggestion by Pete Leeson, of the Woodland Trust, when he spoke to members of
Sustainable Keswick at their final Green Get Together meeting before lockdown.
The charitable trust that runs the park has since approved the move by reserving an area of land for the trees, which is it hoped will capture many tons of carbon during their lifetime while creating a new wildlife haven.
“This is fantastic news and hopefully the first of many collaborations,” said Sustainable Keswick’s chairwoman Cllr Sally Lansbury.
While its Green Get Togethers are currently suspended, Sustainable Keswick’s steering group has continued to meet via Zoom during lockdown and
will hold its AGM online too on Monday 13th July at 6 pm. Meanwhile, it is encouraging members to use their daily one-hour walk or jog as litter picks, packing gloves and a bag to help clean up hedgerows, pathways and the lakeshore or other natural spaces to stop rubbish getting into waterways.
“Sadly, there is a lot of rubbish lurking by the roads and we can just get used to it but once we stop and look we notice how big an issue it is. With community support, we can stop the litter from causing more harm and encourage others to be more cautious of how they treat their rubbish,” said Cllr Lansbury who added that a large amount had been collected on a short walk up Latrigg and along The Hawthorns junction on the A66.
