Keswick has been chosen as the venue for the first event to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Lakes Artists Society.
Northern Lights has sponsored a prize at the society’s annual summer exhibition for several years and it will host its first secret art show at its gallery in St John’s Street.
The Lakes Artists Society was founded back in 1904 to showcase the best artists in Cumbria. By tradition it is limited to 45 members, each one selected for the quality of their work.
The tradition continues 120 years of bringing artists together from all over the county to make one of the most prestigious collectives in the north. Many of the artists have international reputations, exhibiting all over the UK and abroad. All are based in Cumbria.
The Secret Art Show at Northern Lights is a collection of around 100 small artworks, made by the members of the society, to celebrate this special year. Each one is small enough to fit in a CD case.
It’s a secret as all are signed on the back, not the front, so appear to be anonymous. The fun is in not knowing who has made it until it’s yours.
To mark the year the society also made a brochure with each page dedicated to a present member showing examples of their work so its possible to get a clue of who made what.
The Secret Art Show is on at Northern Lights gallery from May 24 until June 2.
