The inaugural Keswick Games were under starter’s orders earlier this week – but the “fun event for the whole community” planned for Sunday was then stood down at the 11th hour.
Organiser Rob Nelson said he was “highly disappointed” at the decision by Keswick Town Council to postpone the event “due to unforeseen circumstances”. He said he had been told it was because of an unfavourable weekend weather forecast.
“I have put a lot of time and effort into it along with Steve Harwood and Ania (Miynczak) in the town council office who has organised the toilets, the bins and water bottles,” said Rob. “I am really sorry it is not happening and I’d like to issue a personal apology. I feel like I am letting everyone down by not following it through, which is rare for me to do.”
Some quirky events had been lined up by organisers for participants including a team sack race, a seven-legged race and an egg and spoon race and an inflatable obstacle course. There were also races for children including an egg and spoon race, 50m race, sack race, skipping race, space hopper race and 200m race. The event was to take place at Townsfield off Penrith Road.
Rob said that he had bought the “creme de la creme” of trophies for the winning team and had personally put on the ribbons for all the children’s medals. “We had got all the kit and we were all ready to go but I don’t think they (Keswick Town Council) put enough advertising of the event out there.”
The statement from Keswick Town Council that was issued on Monday afternoon read: “Due to unforeseen circumstances Keswick Games, due to be held on Sunday 18th August 2024, has been postponed.
“Thank you to all sponsors, volunteers and suppliers who have supported this event to date.
“As soon as we have decided on the revised date we will let you know, so please keep an eye out on our Facebook page and website www.keswicktowncouncil.gov.uk”
The re-organised event is likely to take place in Fitz Park rather than Townsfield.
