One of the biggest and best-known hotels in the North Lakes is to close down after the company which runs it went into administration.
The Derwentwater Hotel at Portinscale had been shut since March because of coronavirus lockdown but it has now been announced that it will not be reopening.
The three-star 48-bedroom hotels enjoys a prime location overlooking Derwentwater and has its own restaurant and bar along with residents’ lounge and conservatory.
It is part of the Coast & Country Hotels chain, owned by Specialist Leisure Group Limited, which went into administration along with its subsidiaries on Friday.
A message on the Derwentwater Hotel’s website now states: “All hotels trading as Bay Hotels, Coast & Country Hotels and Country Living Hotels will not reopen.”
The Specialist Leisure Group operated several businesses under different brand names that sold holidays, including Wallace Arnold Travel shops and Shearings Holidays, which used to bring coachloads of tourists to the Derwentwater Hotel.
The company’s statement said all had ceased to trade “due to the impact of COVID-19”, adding: “All tours, cruises, holidays and hotel breaks booked with the Specialist Leisure Group have been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.”
The statement also says that all employees of companies in the Specialist Leisure Group are being contacted by the administrators.
The Derwentwater was one of 11 hotels all over Britain run by Coast & Country Hotels. The only other one in the Lake District was the Windermere at Windermere.
