A star of the television reality show Gogglebox went from the couch to the top of Helvellyn with the assistance of an experienced fell walker.
Stephen Webb, who regularly appears on the Channel 4 show that features groups of friends and families who comment on the best and worst of weekly TV, was guided to the top of the Lake District’s third highest mountain by Tom Smith.
Tom, who runs Darlington-based Trekking Tom Experiences, was contacted by the celebrity a few months ago after the Brighton hairdresser had expressed a desire to reach the top of the 950-metre high summit via Striding Edge.
But because of last Thursday’s windy and misty conditions, Tom made the decision to attain the summit via the less exposed Swirral Edge instead.
“To be honest he flew up there like it was nothing,” said 28-year-old Tom. “The added mist on the tops helped because you don’t get to see the drops.
“He said that he absolutely loved it and said he could not wait to be back. In his words he said that he has been on a bit of a health kick to try to get fit because he is training to do the London Marathon next year.
“He has seen a lot on the internet about Helvellyn and these videos on social media entice people quite a lot especially Striding Edge because it’s quite a big challenge for some people.
“You never know what you are going to get with TV personalities but he was a really nice bloke and a real pleasure to take out.”
