A new tattie takeaway business has opened in Keswick and has already caught the eye of customers looking to change their usual lunch-time fare.
Wright Spuds Co sits in the former Bellaport Bakes within the Mayson’s store on Lake Road and is being run by Kerry Wright and her partner Sue McCauley.
It specialises in hot jacket potatoes with a range of traditional fillings such as beans, tuna and coleslaw as well as a ‘special’ on the day. There is also a vegan option and Kerry said that the gluten free potatoes were also selling well.
Kerry, who is from Cockermouth, has been in the hospitality industry for most of her career and met Sue when they both worked waiting on at the former Mayson’s restaurant, which is now occupied by The Pocket bar and cafe, around 35 years ago. She has also worked at a restaurant in Whitehaven and the Sugar Shack sweet shop on Dunmail Park in west Cumbria.
She has been semi-retired for six years but said that turning 50 gave her the impetus to set up the new business with Sue.
“I just came up with the idea and thought: ‘Who does not like a jacket potato?’ My niece also mentioned to me about Spud Man who is apparently a massive Tik Tok sensation,” she said.
“I also thought: ‘What is easy and simple and nutritious?’ I just came up with jacket potatoes because they are so easy and there is so much variety.”
The takeaway opened in mid October and Kerry said that business had been brisk and described the response from customers as brilliant.
It is currently open seven days a week from 11.30am until 2.30pm but Kerry said that in the summer, when there are a lot more tourists around, the takeaway may stay open for longer.
