A Border Collie has been rescued after getting stuck on a ledge on a Lake District fell.
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team were called out by a man walking the Coledale Horseshoe with his Border Collie on November 24 at around 1.32pm.
While the pair were descending steep ground, the man’s dog got stuck on a ledge from which it could not return.
Unable to safely climb back up to the dog, the man reluctantly called 999 to ask mountain rescue for assistance.
Team members then made their way up to Eel Crag in blustery conditions, near Crag Hill, from Force Crag Mines, to rescue the dog.
The lead party went above the location and set up a rope rig to lower a team member down to the dog.
Other team members went around the base of the steep ground to help guide the upper party to the location before climbing up to the dog’s owner who was cold, but otherwise fine.
The dog was then lowered from the crag in a purpose-made dog rescue bag. Everyone then walked down to the team vehicles at Force Crag Mine.
But the rescue wasn’t quite over for the team, who on their return along the Force Crag Mine track, were informed by a dog walker that the foot of Whinlatter Pass was closed due to a fallen tree – meaning teams were facing a very long detour.
A Keswick Mountain Rescue Team member said it was the urgent call of dinner that gave the team strength to pull the offending tree out of the road so they could continue on their way.
The spokesman added that the team are often offered a pint or a coffee when they’re called out on a rescue, but that they cannot accept donations towards social events.
Instead, people are welcome to support the team through buy me a coffee, which allows them a small social fund so that the team can get together outside of rescues and training.
You can donate to this fund here and you can donate to the team’s normal rescue fund here.
