A Covid-19 mobile testing unit is currently running from a mobile base at the former Pencil Factory site in Keswick until Thursday (4th June).
The testing site is for people living in the Keswick area who think they have Covid-19 symptoms – a high temperature; a new, continuous cough and a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste.
The Department for Health and Social Care unit is being operated by the 4 Mercian Regiment and people are being advised to pre-book an appointment for the Covid-19 test, although it is possible to just drive or walk in without an appointment.
The eligibility criteria for tests has been extended to include:
- Anyone aged five-years-old and over with symptoms
- Essential worker with symptoms
- Household members of essential workers who are symptomatic
People stay inside their cars during the self-test procedure which involves taking a swab sample from the back of the throat and the inside of the nose. The results come directly to people’s computers or phones usually within 48 hours, although it can take up to five days.
Colour Sergeant Alex Green, who is in charge of the unit onsite at Southey Hill Trading Estate off Main Street, said that his team, which includes a number of reserve soldiers, was working on mobile testing sites across Cumbria including in Keswick, Workington, Cockermouth and Carlisle.
He said: “We are carrying out quite a few tests during the day but there is the capacity to do many more. It is working like a well-oiled machine. We drop off the tests at the end of the day and results are sent usually within 48 hours.
“People arriving are a little apprehensive, but we soon put them at ease. Local people have been so kind because it is quite warm and have popped along with ice-cream.
He added: “The feedback has been very positive. It has been an interesting time as this is something brand new for us as soldiers.”
The 4 Mercian team are on a four-week rotation with a two-week rest period during which time they catch up on the training.
Major Gareth Dixon, who is the Army’s mobile Covid-19 testing unit media contact, said: “The Government has widened the criteria for those eligible for the tests and we are supporting the NHS in getting these tests centres out there.
“Anybody who thinks they may have symptoms, or have come into contact with someone who may have Covid- 19, can be tested and if positive can self-isolate to make sure they do not pass it on”
