Colourful pictures of insects and minibeasts created by children in the Keswick area have gone on display after the winners of the town’s Lions club’s art competition were announced this week.
Children in age groups from 2 to 13 were asked by Keswick Lions to use their artistic skills to record the insects and minibeasts in their environment, then post their artwork in windows in their homes for passers-by to enjoy.
The pictures were then judged by Keswick Lions president Diane Cannon who had the difficult task of choosing winners and runners up from each age range, and four special talent prize-winners. Prizes were donated by the Derwent Pencils company and the Keswick Reminder/ McKanes Printers stationery shop.
Special prizes for superb talent were awarded to: Karina Harwood (aged 11), the three Price Smith children, Jack Bacon (8) and Jordan Loan (7).
Winners / runners-up in the age groups were: 2-4 – Freddie Farnham (2) / Willow Woods (4); 5-6 – Molly Farnham (5) / Olive Woods (6); 7-8 – Finley Holden ( 7) / Maisie Cooper (8); 9-10 – Jude Booth (10) / Aneurin Campbell Savours ( 10); 11-13 – Grace McConnell (13) / Hazel Sleath (13).
Diane said: “There was a wonderful response to the competition, with a huge range of media used. From painted pebbles to flying dragon flies, model bees to highly detailed nature diaries, I was very impressed by the talent and imagination shown by the children. The excellent prize were met with great excitement.
“A display of the winning artworks has been put up in the window of U Compute in Main Street for everyone to admire.”
