Members of the Sustainable Keswick environmental group are to meet with the town’s MP Trudy Harrison today (Friday) to discuss the rebuilding of Britain following the coronavirus pandemic.
The conversation will be based on a recent letter sent to Keswick Town Council, MRs Harrison and Environment Minister George Eustice urging the government to build back better following the current pandemic crisis. The letter asked the government to rebuild with the aim of achieving a society which is both more equal and greener.
The groups says that the need to build a greener society is to avoid three future environmental crises to be faced by humankind:
- Climate change, to prevent more frequent and stronger extreme weather events including Storm Desmond in Cumbria in 2015 and the wildfires in Australia last year. Climate change will also lead to rising sea levels, creating countless numbers of refugees as flooded cities around the world become uninhabitable.
- The catastrophic loss of biodiversity presently occurring. The loss of pollinating insects threatens future food supplies either directly or indirectly with so few around to enable the reproduction of food plants. A greener agenda must address the question of this crisis.
- Waste. The plastic waste in oceans is interfering with their creatures, and jeopardising another of food sources.
Sustainable Keswick spokesman Joe Human said: “This week Boris Johnson announced a large program of projects to restart the economy following the pandemic crisis. It is the aim of the meeting with Trudy Harrison, the PM’s Parliamentary Private Secretary, to persuade him to keep his promise to head the greenest Government ever.”
