I’m trying to stay out of town on market days to be honest. When they’re here, tourists seem to think they don’t need to social distance. It would be better if the market was moved to Fitz Park where there is more space. The market square is like a festival. The safest place to be in the moment is in a shop. The outside is a free for all.

The market has opened too early. People are not shielding as they should be. You wouldn’t think anything was different. People aren’t spending money, so they are not really adding to the economy. Most tourists are on day trips and are just wandering around, so why are they coming here?

I saw a good amount of signage at the market today and the one-way system makes sense. It helps that people are not bumping into each other and anything that helps keep the market running is only a good thing. It’s important to Keswick. We need the market here.
David Wood, 32, of just outside of Keswick
I started my business at the market. It is a great thing because it brings people in. Having said that, it has been far too busy the past couple of weeks and people have not been paying enough attention to each other’s space. Because it is an outdoor market, I don’t think it should be shut down, but we do need to control it. If it got out of hand and we had to shut down Cumbria in general, it would be far worse for businesses.
