Keswick market on Saturday — like today’s Thursday market — has been cancelled due to the national coronavirus lockdown, but unlike Allerdale, neighbouring Eden Council has announced that stalls selling essential goods can continue trading at Penrith’s weekly Tuesday event.
A spokesman for Allerdale Borough Council said it had taken the decision to cancel all markets for the rest of this week due to the introduction of the new national coronavirus restrictions.
“This affects the market in Wigton on Friday and Keswick and Workington on Saturday. Keswick’s market today was also not held.
“The council will be reviewing the guidance and discussing the situation with traders and other partners before any further decisions on future markets are made,” said the Allerdale spokesman.
In contrast, Eden District Council confirmed today that its Tuesday market, held in the town’s Great Dockray area, will continue during lockdown.
An district council spokesman said: “After reviewing government guidance, Eden District Council will be liaising with traders to continue the weekly Penrith market.
“Traders that are selling essential goods, such as food, will be allowed and encouraged to continue trading in the safe, outdoor environment.
“We hope that members of the public will continue to support our market traders in these testing times for everyone.”
