Keswick’s Alhambra Cinema is keeping people up-to-date with what films and theatre productions are available to watch on the small screen during the coronavirus lockdown.
The cinema in St John’s Street closed its doors on 17th March but is using social media to let film buffs and theatre lovers know what would usually be showing on its big screen but is now playing on YouTube.
National Theatre Live is showing free recordings of full length plays on YouTube at 7pm every Thursday, starting this week with One Man Two Guvnors (2nd April).
The Royal Opera is offering a schedule of free broadcasts and live content, bringing both ballet and opera to every home and every device every Friday at 7pm on demand and via its Facebook and YouTube channels.
The schedule is:
- 3rd April – Acis and Galatea, The Royal Opera, 2009
- 10th April – Così fan tutte, The Royal Opera, 2010
- 17th April – The Metamorphosis, The Royal Ballet, 2013
- 24th April – Gloriana, The Royal Opera, 2013
- 1st May – The Winter’s Tale, The Royal Ballet, 2014
Royal Opera House content is also available on radio, TV and online through its ongoing partnership with the BBC. Mayerling, Pappano’s Greatest Arias and Darcey Bussell: Looking for Margot are all available on BBC iPlayer and can be watched at any time.
The British Film Institute Free Player, available online, is also offering lots of archive films free of charge, including a selection on the NHS. Open Culture, offers free cultural and educational media online, which includes lots of free films.
For children, INTO Film is providing age-appropriate movies which includes chats and activities around the film after the screening.
