A group of 40 people have set up Braithwaite Volunteers to provide help and practical support for residents in the villages of Braithwaite, Thornthwaite and the Newlands Valley during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The details of anyone who registers for support will be added to a database – call 017687 53119 or email [email protected]
The aim is to help people with their shopping, picking up prescriptions, posting mail and providing a friendly phone call. Each person asking for support is paired with a volunteer who they contact at any time, and who will keep in touch with them by phone.
The scheme co-ordinator is the Reverend Laurence Biggs, who said: “We would like to support the community and ensure that nobody is left isolated or without support. Everyone seems to be so positive and grateful for the scheme and we have been contacted by people as far away as the south coast to ask us to provide support for relatives in the villages.
“Covid-19 is a huge challenge for us all. As more and more restrictions come into place, it can be quite frightening for people especially those who find themselves in isolation.”
“Years ago, Margaret Thatcher was quoted as saying there is no such thing as society – the response to this pandemic has shown how wrong she was and it has been wonderful to see how the village communities are pulling together to support each other.”
