Keswick’s Fitz Park Trust could receive a much-needed boost to funds as it is to become a beneficiary of the new Allerdale and Lakeland Lottery.
The money-making scheme was created last year by Allerdale Borough Council to support community projects.
A ticket for the Allerdale and Lakeland Lottery costs £1 a week and 60p will go directly to good causes.
It offers prizes up to £25,000.
Parks’ trustee Councillor Duncan Miller said: “I hope that this will raise some much-needed funds for Fitz Park to enable us, as trustees, to maintain such an amazing facility for the town.
“The park is much loved and well used by the people of Keswick, including the local sports clubs, dog walkers and those who simply enjoy the peaceful Upper Fitz Park.”
In a time of shrinking budgets and increased community need, the Allerdale and Lakeland Lottery is intended to enable people to support the causes they care most about.
Following its principle of raising money within the community for the community, it seeks to help good causes to connect with their supporters.
Fitz Park has been a valued community asset in Keswick for more than 130 years.
Lower Fitz Park is home to several sports clubs, along with a children’s playground, flood-lit multi-use sports area and cycle track.
Upper Fitz Park also has tennis and bowls facilities as well as tranquil gardens.
However, it costs £230,000 to run last year and the parks trust, which is a charity consisting of the 12 town councillors, struggles to balance the books.
Parks manager Christine Fawcett and her team are constantly looking for investment to develop, maintain and improve the park.
It is primarily funded by Keswick Town Council through the precept element of the council tax, as well as car parking fees from Crosthwaite Road, hiring out the park and donations.
Tickets for the lottery cost £1 a week and 50 per cent of all tickets sold from the Fitz Park lottery page will go directly to the trust.
A further 10 per cent goes back to other local good causes.
