A plea has been made for the reinstatement of a weather station at Borrowdale Primary School that was considered “a valuable local resource” when it was linked through Keswick School.
A valley resident has contacted Borrowdale Parish Council asking that approaches be made to relevant bodies to try and get the weather stations up and running again.
The latest meeting was told that local residents could use the weather station to predict likely flood events based on the rainfall from the school in a two-hour period.
Members were told that data from a weather gauge at Honister was not available publicly and that the Environment Agency was not going to release the figures.
Councillors noted that the likely reason that the weather stations had ceased operating was because the person who used to organise the system has now retired.
It was suggested that another solution could be the installation of a web cam at the Borrowdale Institute where it could be connected to wi-fi and mains power.
In the meantime, the parish council clerk is to contact the Environment Agency to ask whether it is possible for the information from the Honister and Seathwaite rain gauge be made live.
