An elderly Keswick motorist escaped unscathed after his automatic car crashed through railings at Fitz Park while he was parking on Station Road.
Harry Morter, 90, said he had been inching into a parking spot when his Toyota 1.6 surged forward and he had to turn sharply right to avoid the car in front.
He said his car went through the railings, which helped stop it from careering over a ten foot drop close to Keswick Museum.
“It all happened in a split second,” said Mr Morter, a retired electrical engineer with British Steel.
“There was a terrible crash as I went through the railings. The airbag did not go off. The world collapsed around me. It was a shock to the system, like.
“I think I just knocked the number plate off the car in front.”
Mr Morter said there were a lot of people around when the incident happened last Thursday afternoon but nobody was injured.
Members of Fitz Park Bowling Club, of which he is a member, went to his aid along with bystanders.
He was helped out of his vehicle, given a seat and a hot drink.
“I would like to send my appreciation to everyone who came to help me. The ambulance staff and the police were very helpful,” he added.
