During the lockdown due to the coronavirus crisis, everyone has a part to play in keeping family, neighbours and local community safe.
The charity Crimestoppers is working with a range of partners in the newly-created Community Action Response, developed because of the unique and complex challenges for people in every neighbourhood in the country as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.
Community Action Response – five things you can do:
- Think of others, consider your actions and be kind: people will face the challenges of Covid-19 in some way – from needing basic provisions to help while they are unwell.
- Connect and reach out to neighbours: as self-isolation increases, we need to find new ways to stay connected and check on one another for our physical and mental wellbeing. Share phone numbers and stay in touch.
- Make the most of local online groups: keep up to date, share information and be a positive part of your local community conversations using platforms like Nextdoor.
- Support vulnerable or isolated people: different groups are at increased risk, and social isolation and loneliness are key concerns for all ages. You can help by volunteering for local support services or donating to food banks or similar.
- Share accurate information and advice: support anyone who may be anxious about Covid-19. Signpost them to the correct advice from Public Health England, and encourage people to follow the correct hygiene practices.
People will also be concerned about how to stay safe from crime, especially in these times of increased isolation. You can find all sorts of useful tips on our website www.crimestoppers-uk.org including how to maximise online safety, from avoiding cyber-crime to shopping safely online.
People are also concerned about increases in domestic abuse incidents. Find out how to spot the signs, and what to do if you suspect it’s happening. There’s also advice about what to do if you are a victim of domestic violence and abuse.
Crime unfortunately still goes on, and it’s the people in Cumbria who can help keep streets safe. There are examples of things to look out for, to help keep you, your neighbours, families and friends safe. You can also find out what you can tell Crimestoppers about if you do spot something.
