Mayor of Keswick Cllr David Burn has provided his latest update during the coronavirus crisis in which he says the town needs more help from accommodation providers.
Cllr Burn said: “Keswick town councillors had concerns that with the good weather forecast for last weekend, visitors may be tempted to come to Keswick. Allerdale Borough Council had staff on duty in our main car parks in case this happened but luckily the visitors stayed away.
“The Easter Holiday starts this week and again we are concerned that people may take a chance and make unnecessary journeys. It is of course important that we keep visitors away from Keswick during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We had thought that all accommodation providers in the area were now closed but Cumbria Police have said officers had done research on Airbnb and there were 300 Lake District properties advertised for occupation this Friday.
“Town councillors’ own research shows that there are still local properties advertising accommodation over the Easter holidays. We need these property owners to follow the lead of other local accommodation providers and help keep Keswick safe by not taking further bookings.
“On a different matter, town councillors have been practicing holding virtual meetings over the internet. It is hoped to run the council meeting due on 16th April by this means and information will be put on the council’s website (www.keswicktowncouncil.gov.uk) as soon as we have finalised things.”
