Keswick mountain rescuers were scrambled this week after a family of five became stranded in thick cloud and growing darkness.
An eight-strong team were despatched to Skiddaw last night after receiving a phone call shortly before 10pm.
Using the phone’s GPS, they were able to pinpoint the family’s position close to the summit and erect a group shelter against the high winds and drizzle while their condition was assessed.
Warm and waterproof clothing was provided, as well as chemical heat blankets and high energy food, before the family were helped down the mountain, first to a waiting ambulance at Latrigg and then to their own car below Whitewater Dash.
“There was plenty of time to educate the family about route choice, conditions, timing, navigation, clothing, equipment and decision-making,” said a team spokesman.
“Hopefully a valuable lesson was learned.”
