Firefighters from Keswick, Wigton and Ambleside were called out to a wildfire at Uldale, near Ireby just before 5.50pm yesterday (Sunday).
A specialist unit and two engine crews spent around three hours extinguishing the grass blaze using wildfire jets, one hosereel jet, nine beaters and six napsacks.
This was the second callout to a wildfire in the north Lakes area, following the 800-metre-long hillside blaze on the open fells on Causey Pike in the Newlands Valley near Keswick last Thursday.
Crews from seven stations including Keswick spent around 12 hours tackling that blaze, which led to the following warning from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service area manager Nathaniel Hooton, who said: “Wild fires spread quickly, threaten local wildlife and tackling the fire takes a large amount of the fire service’s time and resources.
“This is especially important at a time when we are supporting the national effort to respond to the Coronavirus outbreak and focusing our valuable resources on helping our partners and supporting Cumbria’s communities and vulnerable people.”
