A massive public party should be held in Fitz Park to celebrate a new post-coronavirus era in Keswick, says the town’s deputy mayor Cllr Paul Titley.
The proposed party “for when we come out the other side of this” is part of a three-pronged positive plan drawn up for the town council by Cllr Titley, who is due to start his second 12-month stint as Keswick’s mayor next month.
The other proposals include appointing a project manager to run a Come Back To Keswick social media campaign and the launch of a Make a Local Difference initiative to consider what the town council can do to improve Keswick for its residents currently in lockdown.
The one-off Party In The Park would be based on the popular live music prom event held in Fitz Park every year as part of Keswick Midsummer Festival but with a broader musical appeal. Cllr Titley floated his triple idea at Thursday night’s town council meeting with the aim of getting it on the agenda for the May meeting, which is again likely to be held in virtual format online.
Along with next month’s 75th VE Day anniversary street party in Market Square, this year’s midsummer festival in June has already been cancelled because of coronavirus. Cllr Titley said he believed social distancing would continue for many months and that the prom in the park was the only part of the festival that could comply with these measures.
“Not everyone loves proms – but they all love the park and this large one-off party based on our proms model should have music and dancing with something for everybody to like,” he said. No date was mentioned but Cllr Titley said the event would have to take place in daylight. “We would organise it very quickly once we get the go-ahead to do it if we have people on stand-by,” he added.
