A new park and sail initiative failed to capture the attention of visitors in first week – though organisers hope more people will take advantage in the coming days.
The initiative was drawn up to reduce the long-standing parking issues that have plagued the west side of Derwentwater.
It provides a 15 per cent discount on the Keswick Launch Company’s lake shuttle service if consumers park at Keswick Rugby Club at a cost of £4.
Due to the staycation boom, a “traffic overload” has seen increasing numbers of cars parked on the side of country lanes below Catbells which has led to bus services being cancelled and residents voicing concerns.
The initiative was launched on Tuesday morning and later on that day, we went to gauge public opinion, only to find motorists unaware of the scheme’s existence. By mid-day the rugby club’s car park was virtually empty despite warm temperatures and a busy town centre.
John Wilson, speaking on behalf of the rugby club and the launch company, said: “There is clearly an awareness issue. Obviously over time word- of-mouth and experiences will bring people back but for now we need to get the word out.
“We’ve got a very large car park that is under-utilised. It’s good value at £4 a day plus the 15 per cent discount for the Keswick Launch.
“The short 10-minute walk across Crow Park is a world class way to start your day.
“It also helps the local community. It’s self help with cash going straight into the community’s pocket.”
At the site, a small laminated sign on the pay and display machine was the only indication of the scheme’s existence and due to a delay AA road signs were not due to be in place until today.
