Keswick cricket club under 13s, led by their captain Joe Brack, are the undisputed champions of Cumbria following their defeat of Carlisle at a sun-soaked Fitz Park last Sunday.
The Keswick team won by 19 runs and while this was very much a team effort there was a ‘Man of the Match’ performance from opening bat Arthur Nettleton who equal top scored in the home innings with 28 runs and then took 3/12 from four overs with the ball as the city side made 84/8 from their 20 overs in reply to Keswick’s 103/4, writes Keith Richardson.
Arthur was one of three Nettleton youngsters in the all-conquering Keswick team, the others being Ted and Jack. All three, like their teammates, are dedicated, enthusiastic and talented young cricketers, all-rounders, who will hopefully go on to produce great results for Keswick 1st XI in the fullness of time.
Hardly a day goes by that the Nettletons are not to be found practising in the KCC nets with their dad Phil wearing out his shoulder with throw downs!
Keswick captain Joe Brack won the toss and elected to bat first. A total of anything over 100 at this age level is potentially match winning. No 4 batsman Jacob Black equalled the top individual score of 28 and hit the only six of the game as Keswick’s cause was helped by the 22 extras conceded by the visitors, including 13 wides.
Also in double figures for Keswick was Ted Nettleton with 11.
In reply Carlisle were restricted to 84/8 as Alexander Angus top scored with 23. In addition to the three wickets taken by Arthur Nettleton, Ted Nettleton – who came out from behind the wickets to bowl – claimed 2/12 from three and team leader Brack 2/14 from four. Other bowlers, Jay Cruikshank and Theo Wallace were economical without taking wickets.
Vitto Zavaglia took two catches.
The Under 13s title win came after Keswick won the western division of the Cumbria Junior Cricket League, while Carlisle won the eastern division and the two met to settle the issue of which team was county champions at Under 13 level.
The full victorious Keswick team was: Joe Brack (cpt), Ted Nettleton (wk), Jack Nettleton, Arthur Nettleton, Jay Cruikshank, Euan Edwards, Ellie Karolyi-Horvath, James Page, Theo Wallace, Vitto Zavaglia and Jacob Black.
Carlisle overpower U15s
THE day provided a double header in that Keswick Under 15s also took on their counterparts from Carlisle on completion of the Under 13 game. Unfortunately, Keswick could not accomplish the double because Carlisle were much stronger, especially in the batting department, than a young Keswick side, some of whom doubled up to play in both the Under 13 and under 15 title deciders.
In the Under 15 game, Carlisle batted first and made a highly challenging 165/2 with Jake Anderson taking 2/16 from four overs.
In reply Keswick were held to 91/9 from their 20 overs
as Carlisle won easily by 74 runs.
For the home team, Lewis Edwards top scored on 30 not out (batsman must ‘retire’ after reaching 30) while also in double figures were Josh Wilson (14) Arthur Nettleton (10) and Ted Nettleton (11).
The weather was superb throughout the day with a big crowd basking in the sunshine and taking full advantage of the KCC barbecue, manned by KCC junior parents who also ran a cake stall.
