A prominent Victorian guesthouse in Keswick is to be turned into two self-catering holiday lets.
The eight-room Melbreak House, at the corner of Church Street and Eskin Street, won planning permission this week.
Vierna McLellan applied to the Lake District National Park and officers recommended it for approval.
The scheme was unanimously agreed by members of its development control committee at its recent meeting.
Keswick Town Council had objected on the grounds that it opposed the loss of a family dwelling to serve the holiday market.
Councillors have previously raised several concerns about the proliferation of self-catering holiday accommodation into residential areas and how it can have a social impact on residents, compared to B&Bs with owners living on site.
Planner Phil Nicholls told the committee that the guesthouse has eight rooms and it calculated that the two holiday units could provide up to 12 rooms.
Mr Nicholls said: “In our view, while that does lead to a minor increase for the potential of rooms being used, that doesn’t result in any adverse impacts.”
Committee member Paul Turner said of Keswick Town Council’s objection: “It’s not a family dwelling it’s holiday accommodation being changed into a different type of holiday accommodation.”
