Temperatures reached a record high for June in Keswick yesterday (Thursday 25th) as the town sweltered, sending hordes of people scurrying to local lakes and rivers to cool off.
Ice-creams and cold drinks were snapped up as the thermometer rose to 29.7C – that’s an incredible 85.4F – according to the Keswick Reminder’s weather watcher Lorna HG Holden.
However, she believes the temperature will have hit the 30C (86F) milestone somewhere in Keswick according to data recorded by other local meteorological enthusiasts. Keswick’s previous hottest June day was exactly 30C, while the town’s all-time hottest day of any month came on 25th July last year when the temperature hit 31.2C.
“We maxed out at a disgustingly hot 29.7C but no doubt there will be other weather watchers in and around Keswick that will have recorded hotter, so I would say we’ve at least equalled the record for June of 30C,” said Lorna. “The 30C record is for the last 20 years but it reached 29C in 2018.
“It certainly looked on course to beat the record this morning (Thursday) when it was already 28.2C at 11.30am but the weather is a teaser and it plateaued out. It was still very, very hot and still equals the record. I have no doubt that somewhere in town exceeded 30C,” she added.
Keswick’s June average maximum temperature is 18.8C but temperatures had peaked at 27.1C on Wednesday, with the forecast correct for even hotter the following day. However, the hot spell is not due to last as the next few days bring muggy conditions, thundery showers and rain, with a top temperature of just 14C for Sunday.
