Ice and high winds are on their way to Cumbria, the Met Office is warning.
The Met Office had already put a yellow weather warning in place, but has now increased the danger level to amber.
The amber alert, issued when there is an increased likelihood of severe weather, is for ice. It will be in effect from 9am to 8pm.
The yellow warning for snow and ice remains in place.
The Met Office said: “A band of freezing rain and snow will move north east across the UK on Sunday.
“Freezing rain is most likely to affect higher ground within the warning area and may last for three to four hours in some places leading to ice build up of 2mm to 3mm on untreated surfaces.
“Where this occurs it will likely cause treacherous travel conditions and road closures.
“In addition 40mph to 50mph winds will lead to possible ice accretion on trees, power lines and other structures. Freezing rain and snow will turn back to rain during the evening and overnight as milder air arrives, leading to rapid melting of ice.”
What to expect
- Injuries from slips and falls and danger to life on icy surfaces are possible
- Dangerous driving conditions may occur, leading to road traffic collisions, road closures and longer journey times; while pavements and cycle paths may become impassable
- Bus, train and air travel may be affected by delays and cancellations
- There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
The yellow weather warning for snow and ice, between 7am and 9pm means the Met Office is expecting a period of freezing rain and snow, which will lead to some disruption to travel and other activities, before turning to rain later.
What to expect
- Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.
- Some rural communities could become cut off
