Keswick’s Fitz Park was buzzing on Wednesday as hundreds of children from across the county took part in the Cumbria Schools’ Cross Country Championships.
Nearly 500 Year 7 to 13 youngsters from the six districts – Allerdale, Eden, Copeland, Carlisle, Furness and south Lakeland – converged on the park to take part in a series of races for minors, juniors, intermediates and seniors. They were encouraged around courses, ranging in distance 2,000 to 6,000 metres, by scores of spectators and teaching staff who witnessed some thrilling races.
The first 16 in each event earned selection for the national Inter Counties Championships which will take place in Middlesbrough next month. There were no results available as the Reminder went to press.
“The park was really buzzing,” said organiser and time-keeper Steve Harwood. “It was an absolutely glorious day considering what it would have been like a week ago. It was a really good day and people had a good time.”
