When you decide to swim outdoors for charity every day throughout June you would be forgiven for expecting some decent weather, but that’s not been the case for Ali Martin from Keswick.
Ali has endured pouring rain and fierce winds regularly since she began her Swim For Her challenge to support Breast Cancer Now (BCN), the research and support charity.
The Reminder caught up with her by Bassenthwaite Lake two weeks into her swims. Ali said: “Some days have been better than others but so far the weather has not been kind. However, I am determined to keep going until June 30. I’m doing this for a good cause, so that keeps me motivated.”
Ali, aged 61, is a volunteer with BCN, which runs its Moving Forward courses across Cumbria, in conjunction with the NHS.
She continued: “The shock of diagnosis of breast cancer, as well as treatment, side effects and worries about recurrence can make it difficult for women to readjust to normal life. The Moving Forward courses help them feel more empowered, and confident.”
As a breast cancer survivor, Ali attended a Moving Forward course in Carlisle and found the support invaluable. “This really motivated me to help other women going through the same experience.”
Most of Ali’s swimming has been in Bassenthwaite Lake and Ullswater, although she took to the sea during a short visit to the Isle of Wight earlier this month.
“I’m actually enjoying the swims. I’d like to do more. It’s lovely to be outdoors surrounded by the fells, whatever the weather – although I’m not sure my husband Glyn would say the same. He has supported me and watched from the shore every day.”
Having got a taste for the regular cold water dips, Ali now plans to undertake a swim across Bassenthwaite Lake to raise money for BCN, although she says she’ll be sure to check the weather forecast first!
